Iraq, officially the Republic of Iraq is a country in the Middle East. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in the south, Turkey to the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan to the west, and Iran to the east. The capital, Baghdad. Large parts of Iraq consist of desert, but the area between the two rivers Euphrates and Tigris is fertile. The northern Kurdish part of the country is mostly mountainous, with Haji Ibrahim at 3,600 meters the highest point. Iraq has a short coastline on the Persian Gulf. Within the coast and along the Shatt al-Arab was the former large swamp areas. The climate is characterized by desert with mild to cold winters and hot and dry summers.

The inhabited part of Iraq is dominated by rivers Tigris and Euphrates, and belongs to the land historically known as "The Fertile Crescent".

Iraq's tourist industry gave earlier large revenues because of Iraq's many places of cultural and historical interest. In the '70s, Iraq was a favorite holiday destination. The war against Iran, the Gulf War and subsequent invasion of Iraq (spring 2003), however, has reduced the number of tourists really.
