The country has no coastal access, but is well definertt by countless rivers and is known for its many large waterfalls and streams. Mighty Mekong flows through the country from north to south, and the majority of the population living in the lowlands along the river. Rivers are an important part of the infrastructure of the country routes, as much of the topography is characterized by hills and mountains so the road construction is difficult and costly.

Laos is predominantly Buddhist. The city of Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ancient temple buildings located in the city center. Laos has a diverse population, with the greatest impact from Thai and Khmer, but many minority scattered in different parts of the country. Some groups live with minimal influence from the nation's capital because of the difficult topography. This variation is also cause for conflict between the minority and the country's central administration.
