South Korea, the Republic of East Asia. South Korea is located on the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula. It borders North Korea to the north, the East Sea (Sea of Japan) to the east, Korea Strait in the south and the Yellow Sea to the west.
South Korea was formerly part of Korea, which covered the whole of the Korean peninsula. The country was split in two after World War II. The two parts, South Korea and North Korea has had a tense relationship since the split.

The Korean Peninsula has a rich history and has been the seat of ancient civilizations. The geographical location between China and Japan has been important, and these two countries have had varying influence on the peninsula.

South Korea has an open, export-oriented economy. The country has gone from being a poor, war-torn country into a G-20 countries, considered one of the most developed.
