Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory consisting of two groups of tropical coral islands ii western India. Turks and Caicos Islands is located southeast of Mayaguana in the Bahamas and north of the island of Hispaniola. The capital Cockburn Town is located on Grand Turk Island, about 1042 km east-southeast of Miami in Florida, USA. The islands are geographically contiguous with the Bahamas, but has a very different political system than its neighbor.
The islands are about. 31 000 inhabitants. Around 22,500 of them live on the island of Providenciales in the Caicos Islands. The capital Cockburn Town is located on Grand Turk Island. It used the U.S. dollar on the islands. Because the Turks and Caicos Islands are a British overseas territory and not an independent state, they can not issue their own citizenship to those who want it. Turks and Caicos Islands is named after a cactus called Melocactus communis. The very first settlers who came to the islands were the Arawak-speaking Taino people, who crossed the islands of Hispaniola sometime between 500 and 800 AD. Other ethnic groups, Indians and nomads also crossed over to the island of Cuba, headed for the southern Bahamas. Several of them settled permanently in what is now known as the Turks and Caicos Islands. |
